Honestly joplin is not anywhere in the same league as the dead... sounds like she gargles with crushed glass and looks like she used to pop her zits with a hypo syringe. I sat down and objectively listened to her music with a critical ear and heard nothing special. I have seen better female vocalists at bars. You don't have to like someone just because they are from your generation, ya think I like 1980's music? Yikes, worst shit in the last 100 years if you ask me. Say no to Janis, it's the right thing to do. If I sound like Tito, sorry.

then i guess you don't have any of the following in your collection: Feelies, Slint, Husker Du, REM, Felt, Mission of Burma, Bad Religion, Dinosaur Jr., Charlatans UK, Sonic Youth, Smiths, Ride, Lemonheads, Galaxie 500, Chameleons, Bats, Celibate Rifles, Incredible Casuals, Marginal Man, Pixies, Naked Ray Gun, X, Dead Kennedys, Ultra Vivid Scene, Black Flag, Pogues, Nick Cave, Shallow Reign, Wedding Present, etc., etc.

You make my point for me. 3 good bands in there, the rest were mediocre at best, that's just my opinion. Again, you get to keep your opinion with me and I won't hate you for it.

I was specifically referring to the music like pet shop boys and the androgynistic weak vocal pop that girls and guys who think like girls dig. New kids on the block and bands like that, ya know? There was some great jazz, metal and rap too but it was in the minority. Most of the metal that people remember is annoying shit like quiet riot, motley crue, poser hair bands etc. Not fates warning, forbidden, metallica, etc. they were balls to the way power riffs not whiny I look like a girl so lesbians will strap it on for me.

But for the most part the 80's was a wasteland for audiophiles. People like morrisey whining about, well nothing really. They ripped the balls out of punk rock, kicked the drummer out of the disco bands and tried to make heavy metal pretty... Strategic failures all.

no argument at all, just always amazes me that people dismiss '80s music, and that list i threw down was just off the top of my head in a minute, i could have listed quite a few more, however, no biggie, you got yours and i got mine, all is good

Hey guy; good to see you hereabouts, though hard to pick you out with all the other crap.

Don't forget to work on that commercial license; you're doing double duty on driving the bus and playing in the band of LMA Allstars once we hit the road...first stop is SDH's compound for some refreshment and rejuvenation...

damn WT, surprised you recognized me, i've been making my rounds in the full regalia of fat Elvis; thanks for the offer to drive the bus, not so sure though that i can live up to Neil's entertaining standards, but i am a somewhat skilled juggler, and have been known to be pretty slick with the card tricks; as for instruments ... any room for a whistle blower?

well yeah, and Jimi Hendrix couldn't even tune his freakin guitar. I rarely listen and/or enjoy most of his stuff BUT there's no denying his HUGE influence on all that followed. Same can be said for Janis. She turned the role of women in music on it's head and blew a lot of her peers away.

Well maybe but disco and rap have had bigger influences and most of those two genres suck badly. Jimi did things on guitar that had not been done yet, you can hear the talent in his notes. Yngwie Malmsteen could play circles around jimmy but his impact is no where near as important to the guitar world.

Like a thread or two before summed it up, popularity, talent, following and influence usually have little to do with each other. I mean, look at Kiss, they had a huge following, were popular but were just run of the mill musicians at the right place and the right time. They suck but millions loved them. Some people think Jimmy Page was a virtuoso and some of his studio work sounds sloppier than noisecollectors old practice tapes on acid. Listen to the music, not the musician. But unlike others in here, I support your decision to like whatever you like without judging you for it!

Hey! That's my thread...but, you make the point well, so I say, "welcome" or "thank you"...

I have to agree with JGlynn; like JJ in small doses. Especially liked the early sound with BBrother as then it was more of a "band" rather than just her fronting on her own.

The movie is a nice snapshot of her and Jerry and the others on that trip. Her interactions with the guy running the show are cool.

And you just made a good point about bands vs musicians, put together a few decent musicians that "click" and you have something much more than just individuals matching tempos and keys. Something prank phone call recorders don't understand, and yes is started to sound like tito. Songs and artists are popular for a reason, just as great musicians out there never get a top ten hit. They might put out 100 top 40 hits that get played year in and year out so technically they would be more popular... or they could tour everyday and practically ignore the radio and get a lot of fans that way, until the new crowd came along and pissed in their parking lot while facing haight and ashbury and anger the gods...

That's the great thing about living in a free country, you don't need anyone's permission to speak. No one likes your redundant rants about 20 year old pointless trivia either but you post it anyway don't you. Now go ahead and start with the death threats and childish behavior so they can delete your account again, the forum will be better off with you not in it. The way you scare off new deadheads is funny, self defeating and idiotic, but funny none the less. Do us all a favor and let us think for ourselves. Iko sucks and so does janet, don't take it personal, britney spears sucks too, it has nothing to do with you. These truths are independent of your will and trying to be a forum vigilante is degrading. Will you ever be cool?

Please do not be civil or negotiate with conversation, it will confuse the slash and burn all or nothing crowd.
